I have a hard time eating healthy.
I tend to do it in bursts, with the mindset that it will end at some point and I’ll get all my junk food back, which isn’t really the point, is it? But if there’s one thing about being an adult that really bugs me, it’s tending to my health. And my weight. Also property taxes and car maintenance and monitoring screen time and people asking what I do for a living.
Basically, it sucks to grow up. What happened to the days when an afternoon in the backyard chasing lady bugs and trying to use a blade of grass as a whistle was considered productive?
Anyhow, I’ve been eating a lot of junk lately, and I just haven’t had the willpower to start a diet or count my servings of fruit and veg or any of that. I’m so deep in the junk food zone, guys. But I’ve implemented one thing–one very small thing–and after about a week I’m feeling healthier already.
I’m eating an apple a day.
This is so different from what I usually do. I usually dive head first into diet and exercise until I feel weak, tired, deprived, and angry–and I’ve dropped a few pounds. Then I celebrate with cake. I believe they call this yo-yo dieting.
But this apple a day thing feels promising. The apple is delicious–I’m a Granny Smith girl, for the most part–and it’s sweet and tart and approachable. It’s almost to the point where I don’t have to remind myself to eat an apple. Once I get to that point, I’ll start another habit. Maybe carrots at lunchtime. I can handle carrots.
Does this sound ridiculous? Am I taking a sensible approach or am I just using my apple as a way to feel better about all the cheese and crackers?
