Goals & Challenges

33 for 33

Birthday #29, and potentially the happiest I’ve ever looked on camera. I blew out all the candles in one go and managed to keep Sam from burning himself at the same time.

When I turned 30, I set myself a goal: I would do 30 new things before I turned 31. Well, that didn’t exactly work out, though I did do one big thing. I gestated a baby. Which is a lot harder than it looks.

Anyway, I don’t plan on gestating anything this year except maybe an idea for a new novel, so I should have plenty of time and energy to make 33 the best, most interesting year yet.

So I’ve been brainstorming my list, thought it might change over the course of the year. Here’s what I’ve got so far:

  • Visit a psychic
  • Try snowboarding
  • Make a croquembouche
  • Take an archery class
  • Crochet a granny square
  • Successfully shape a cake and cover it in fondant
  • “Win” NaNoWriMo (okay, I’ve done this before but it’s still a good goal)
  • Paint a landscape
  • Learn some basic HTML
  • Take a barre class
  • Learn to juggle
  • Master two more chords on my guitar (I’ve been teaching myself since about 2012…give me ten more years and I’ll know all the chords and maybe some finger picking!)
  • Run a 5K
  • Take my kids to Disneyland
  • Visit a state I’ve never been to (maybe New Mexico?)
  • Volunteer at a shelter/soup kitchen or similar
  • Read one of the classics I haven’t read before
  • Potty train the girl
  • Get Sam into soccer lessons
  • Get rid of all the shoes that no longer fit me (hard to admit but my feet are bigger than they were pre-kiddos, and what’s the point of holding on to shoes that pinch?)

Am I being unreasonable? Maybe. This is only 20 items and it already feels like a lot. But I like a challenge. I like an adventure. And without setting myself these strange, arbitrary goals, I’ve found that life is pretty boring. (If you think I’ve only recently started setting myself weird challenges, visit aperfectomnivore.blogspot.com).

So stay tuned! And if you have any ideas for me, I’d love to hear them. After all, I plan to write about these things, and I’ve got to give the people what they want.

Oh yeah I’m writing this because today is my birthday. Happy birthday to me.
